Where is This All Headed?

Since time immemorial, most humans have been preoccupied with survival.

Day in, and day out, they toiled to meet their immediate needs: Food, water, shelter.

I’m fortunate enough to have ample food, water, and a roof over my head. In fact, if I play my cards right, those immediate needs will be covered indefinitely with very little effort on my part. But as you ascend the hierarchy of needs, one’s goals become less explicable and easily defined. And now, for the umpteenth time, I face a weighty question: Where is this all headed?

Here are some options I’m considering, in no particular order:

  • Start/bankroll a new business or creative venture
  • Learn how to become self-sufficient: Grow my own food, learn to hunt, create resource infrastructure, etc.
  • Commit to a long-term writing project, such as a book or screenplay (although based on my past experience, the chance of one being fulfilling/rewarding is small)
  • Help nurture someone else’s dreams (mostly through emotional support)

None of these options are mutually exclusive. In theory, I could perform them all or some combination. As always, the limiting factor is time.

Take the left track. Why? Because I can’t see what’s around the corner, but I want to find out. The photo you chose to illustrate your query is a great visual analogy. The straight path to the horizon is clear, direct and seems apparent. It represents what we all think we are all doing: moving, even uncertainly, to our latest goal. However, the truth is life is more like the left path. What lies ahead is often unclear, filled with mystery, promise, surprises and yes, possible pain and tears too. It’s the human experience, emotional growth, self knowledge and one day closer to a small, quite, peaceful moment. The kind of peace that lets you say: what a lovely day. I wonder what’s in store for me today? I think I’ll find out.

Travel. Travel. Travel. Expanding your horizons is never a bad thing. Go someplace you couldn’t ever imagine visiting. It’s amazing what it does to your perspective.

I’m not big on travelling (especially considering my condition now), but like most people, I like novelty. So, yeah, I suppose there could be more travel in my future. Thanks for the suggestion!

I am very much enjoying doing a little bit of everything that interests me; learning new things or skills, even to the most basic level, can really scratch that itch. Working/spending time outside is also rewarding. Mix it up!

      Very true. Variety is important.

Where is this all headed? I’d like to tell you you’ll find the answer but my experience is that you’ll be asking yourself this one for your whole life. You choose a direction, go on your way and somehow wind up somewhere else. But it’s ok! You’re moving. You’re changing. You’re growing. Appreciate the journey and find joy in each step on your way.
